Rivers, Streams, and Ponds
- Always read and obey the water safety information signs, if available
- Don’t stand on an overhanging bank
- Check the current before entering the water, if conditions are to rough don’t swim
- Caution: river currents are typically faster as you move away from the shore
- Always enter feet first, slowly
- Check water depth and temperature before entering
- beware of deep drop offs. You could be in waist deep water and take one step and be in deep water
- Supervise child swimming in any areas/depths of water regardless of ability
- Be aware of others participating in water sports, such as water skiing
- Backyard ponds should have a self-closing, self-latching barrier around the designated area
- Backyard ponds need covers to avoid children falling in
- Look for snags, sandbanks, weeds, rocks, and other hazards to avoid
- Stay clear of boats, ramps or boating areas
- Avoid mud or quicksand, if caught lay flat on the surface slowly moving
arms and legs out
- If caught in fast flowing water or rapids float feet first in a half sitting position
- Avoid murky waters where unexpected drop-off and hidden objects could be
- Be sure that rafts and docks are in good condition, never swim underneath them
- Learn to swim
