- Never let children play in the pool or spa without adult supervision
- Put a fence all the way around
your pool or spa
- The fencing should be at least
five feet high and a self-closing, self-latching gate.
- Always keep gates and fences closed and locked when not in use
- Remove all object nearby that could allow a child to climb over gates or fences
- Have an alarm on fence door or gate, to signal when being opened
- Spa lid covers should be closed unless in use
- Have a first-aid kit available and nearby
- Store chemicals in closed containers and out of the child's reach
- Surrounding area of pool should be made of a non-slip material
- Keep pool water clean and clear
- Adult supervisor should know CPR and first-aid
- Maintain chemical daily to ensure safe swimming
- Change filters regularly and keep up on maintenance
- Post pool rules on behavior that must be followed, such as no-diving if the pool is shallow
- Make sure children know he/she cannot prop open the pool gate, this goes for adults too
- Be sure to clean up toys and floatation devices after use
- Never leave children in the pool or spa alone, even for a minute
- Keep track of spa water temperature
- Children should spend no longer then 5-20 minutes in spa depending on age and temperature of water
- Infants and toddlers should never be allowed in a spa
- Make sure parents of all the children in the pool or spa are aware that he/she is there
- Have a cordless phone nearby or install one, in case of emergency 9-1-1 can be called
- Pool covers should be completely removed when the pool is in use and completely on when the pool is not being used
- Keep basic lifesaving equipment near the pool and know how to use it
- Pool and spa drains are extremely dangerous, make sure all drains are anti-entrapment
- To find anti-entrapment drains check with your local pool supplier
